Frank Gambale Man of the Year, Jing Chi, Cafe Roma, Andy Bey

Frank Gambale Is TomorrowJazz Man of the Year 2004I’m behind on mentioning things worth mentioning. Here’s my first attempt at catching up…
3D is the latest CD by Jing Chi, the trio of Jimmy Haslip, Robben Ford, and Vinnie Colaiuta. It’s loud. It rocks. Special appearances by Robert Cray and Larry Goldings. Sample “Time Is A Magazine” . . I listened to samples of the Cafe Roma 2 set at Barnes & Noble in 2004. I was intrigued by the prospect of listening to Italian nu-jazz. I loved the first four songs enough that I contacted the label. They sent me a copy of the first Cafe Roma two-disc set which was also great. If you haven’t experienced chill-out/downtempo/whatever you want to call it music before, this would be a great introduction . . . One of my favorite discoveries in 2004 was hearing singer Andy Bey on the Intuit CD. . . 2004 Man of the Year is Frank Gambale. He had a killer reunion with the Chick Corea Elektric Band, a great solo CD, Raison D’Etre, and a new CD with Vital Information. He keeps his web site updated so check it out. My sympathies to Frank on the recent sad events he talks about there.
